Folio 66: Newcastle to Waldegrave and Keene. The Captain of the City Guard at Edinburgh, John Porteous, caused several deaths by ordering the guard to fire on a disorderly crowd at a public execution, and was condemned to death. While benefitting from a temporary reprieve he was dragged out of gaol and hanged by the mob. The culprits are being sought by the government.
