Folio 55: Waldegrave to Newcastle. Chauvelin hints that presence of British fleet off Portugal may make Spain more intractable; Spanish forces have taken Nova Colonia; Fleury says Spain is obstructing mediation; and comments on the Emperor's ambitions to seize territories from the Turks in the Balkans. Patiño's illness raises the problem of a replacement should he die as Fleury `knows of nobody at that [Spanish] Court capable of the common business of the Secretary's office alone'; Fleury wants a joint agreement to settle the succession to Berg and Jülich.
