Folio 31: Waldegrave to Newcastle. Has told Fleury that Britain will not enter into any engagements contrary to French interests, in order to counteract Chauvelin's insinuations that Britain is responsible for all diplomatic setbacks suffered by France. Fleury mentions Austria's unlimited ambitions and declares his wish for a strong alliance between Britain and France, which he has advocated despite the argument advanced by d'Antin, that such an alliance proved, on the last occasion, unreliable, when Britain secretly concluded the Treaty of Vienna (1731) to the exclusion of France; Waldegrave `seemed eager' for an alliance and believes Fleury's hopes show that he is not proceeding with any activity contrary to English interests.
Date and place: 1736 Sept 25, Paris.
