Folio 225: Waldegrave to Newcastle. Fleury maintains that it was necessary to curb the Emperor's expansionist designs, and that he had restrained the French army from pushing into Germany. Fleury professes relief that Mantua has not been taken so that the Emperor may not be wholly forced out of Italy; Spain has promised France not to attack Portugal; Fleury insists that Poland must be included in the armistice; Sweden has reserved right to honour her commitments to Britain; proposals to marry the princesses of Lorraine to the King of Sardinia and the King of the Two Sicilies; Tartars are massing to attack Muscovy.
