Folio 133: Fleury to R. Walpole. Protest at lack of secrecy about peace plan which is now widely known; objections regarding successions to Poland, Tuscany, Parma, Mantua, Castro; French concern for Lorraine and limits of Alsace; independence of princes in the Empire and fiefs in Italy; successions to Berg and Schleswig; Britain shows a bias in favour of the Emperor's interest; recognition of the Pragmatic Sanction would strengthen the Emperor's power over the Empire and together with his influence over Holland and his alliance with Russia, upset the balance of power. However to avoid an extension of the war Fleury will broadly accept the plan providing it is also accepted by Spain and Savoy.
Date and place: 1735 Mar 14, Versailles.
