Description

Folio 268: The Emperor's instructions to Seckendorff, [Austrian envoy to Prussia and to George II when in Hanover]. Arguments against Spanish garrisons in Parma and Tuscany; Emperor not disposed to promise one of his daughters in marriage to Don Carlos and Spanish reaction against alliance with Austria; belief that Britain, France and Spain may make an alliance against Austria. Austria should therefore come to an agreement with Britain and France, and also Prussia and abandon alliance with Spain; concern to obtain agreements to Pragmatic Sanction, and guarantees that the next Austrian sovereign shall again be elected Emperor or Empress of the Holy Roman Empire; the suspension of the Ostend Company will mean that Austria will no longer be able to afford the former expenditure on the Barrier; if agreement cannot be reached on a tariff for the Austrian Netherlands, Austria must clearly express her hereditary right to fix it herself; Austria will support Duke of Holstein's claim to an equivalent for Schleswig; Prussia agrees with Emperor's action in Mecklenburg; Mecklenburg subjects owe their deepest loyalty to the Emperor; Austrian desire to conciliate Hanover; the Aulic Council will handle the East Friesland question; proposed treaty between Prussia and Russia and secret clause concerning agreement to elect [Frederick Augustus] as next King of Poland; Prussian desire that Count Plettenburg be made Vice-Chancellor of the Empire; Austrian desire to remove minor disagreements with Saxony.
