Austria would support Spain militarily to a limited extent only, and wishes to avoid a war; Kings of Poland and Prussia and Elector of Bavaria postulate unacceptable conditions for alliance with the Emperor; France rejects Prussian proposals regarding Mecklenburg; death of Elector of Mainz and possible consequences; French fear of a Spanish Prince becoming Emperor [of the `Holy Roman Empire'].
