Folio 372: H. Walpole and W. Stanhope to Newcastle. Chauvelin reveals that France has obtained the assent of the Elector Palatine to a treaty by which the latter recognizes French sovereignty over Alsace, and promises his neutrality in the event of conflicts. In return France guarantees the succession to Berg and Jülich to his family. Prospects for concluding the proposed Treaty of the Electors are thus remote. Chauvelin appears to be gaining the ascendancy over the aging Fleury to British distress.
Date and place: 1728 Nov 30, Paris.
