Stair might suggest that the Dutch become parties to, and guarantors of, the French succession, to check King of Spain's ambitions, strengthen the peace of Europe and hasten the conclusion of a treaty; Jacobite rising in Scotland repulsed, but Irish regiments rumoured landed in Scotland; crushing rebellion would strengthen George I's position.
