Description

Folio 215: Pontchartrain to Dartmouth. Disputes arising from alleged infringements of the fishing convention. Complaints made by French fishermen about privateers from Jersey and Guernsey and that they obtained no justice. English accused of stealing French boats to use for raids. Asks for restoration of all such boats or French will retaliate. Vessel from Newfoundland, although ransomed by English fleet and allowed to sail free for two months, was burnt by privateer from Guernsey under Richard Robinson. Asks for compensation. Mr. Lloyd, former governor of St. John and Newfoundland, died at Dinan. Alleged that Irish officer in French service killed him in duel; no proof of this. English prisoner officers allowed to carry sword; may French in same circumstances? Asks for punishment of Lord Dursley who, in command of the Kent, captured Le Content and maltreated the crew. Asks for better treatment of French prisoners especially at Plymouth and Kinsale. Sunderland has asked for the release of Daniel Lintstant native of Canterbury, condemned by French to galleys after deserting Dorrington's regiment. Complains that French prisoners' bread rations have been reduced. French King sent back all English officers and French refugees imprisoned in France. Asks in return for all Irish prisoners in England especially those at Newgate.
