Folio 74: Duke of Alva [Alba], Count Bergeyek and Prince Starlborough to Duke of Marlborough, claiming that they are Spanish plenipotentiaries for peace talks. Spain refuses to accept the dethronement of Philip V, her legitimate king, which appears to have been suggested by the allied representatives at the Hague as a precondition for peace. This would establish a new precedent. Spain would welcome a settlement however, and British and Dutch mediation to obtain peace with the Empire also.
Date and place: 1709 Aug 15, Paris.
