Description

Folio 81: Robert to [?Pontchartrain]. Detailed account of events since July 13; Pontchartrain's letter received and its contents communicated; beginning of hostilities; embarkation by French; French ships at Martinique; some ships lost to English in a skirmish; more embarkations; M. de Gennes; arrival of a ship carrying mail (July 23); further movements at sea and victory by English in minor engagement; expedition to help other French colonies; arrival of English; activities on St. Kitts; French capitulation there; remarks on French failure and rôle of M. de Gennes; further embarkations; arrival of an English ship from St. Kitts; communications to and from Europe; a consultation between the English and French; unwillingness of de Gennes to fight; an assembly on the island; articles of capitulation enclosed; dealings concerning the articles; movements of English troops; writer certain of the accuracy of his account of events; attitude of de Valmeinier; writer's blame of de Gennes; criticism of behaviour of English and Dutch; possible punishments for de Gennes; measures taken to help those taken from St. Kitts; rifles requested to help return to St. Kitts; English vessels expected; writer hopes that French vessels will also come.
