Under the Ancient Monuments and Archaelogical Areas Act of 1979, the Secretary of State for the Environment was authorised to compile, maintain and publish a schedule of ancient monuments. Under the terms of the National Heritage Act of 1983, the Secretary of State was required to consult with English Heritage before adding to or removing monuments in England from the schedule.
