In addition to the main Board, the executive directors met regularly under the chairmanship of the Chief Executive. These meetings, generally held monthly, acted as a channel for communication between the Chief Executive and executive directors and were a forum for discussion and formulation of policy and related decisions. The precise composition, powers and functions of the meetings varied slightly from time to time and the name was changed several times. Commencing as Chief Executive's Committee (1970-1971) it became Operations and Finance Committee (1972-1975), Operations Committee and Management Committee (1975-1976) reverting to Chief Executive's Committee from 1977, but retitled as Operational Strategy Group briefly during 1985.
