This series consists of papers of the Staff Department of the National Bus Company. The records cover trade union negotiations, employment, training, pensions, staff engagement, redundancy, industrial tribunals and one- person operations. The series also contains records of the National Council for the Omnibus Industry which refer to trade union negotiations between the workforce and employers on such matters as wages and working conditions. These records date from before the NBC but still have a relevance for the company.
From 1 January 1969 the National Bus Company (NBC) appointed an Industrial Relations Officer to deal primarily with trade union relations. Mr P J Brett held this office until 1971 with Mr J M Blanksby as training development officer. In 1972 NBC appointed Mr G Duckworth MBE, Director of Manpower and Planning, he was also a member of the Executive Board of NBC. Mr Brett had his responsibilities widened to include training and was restyled Industrial Relations and Training Officer. This increase in status reflected the developing legislation concerning staff matters, the introduction of pensions and the widening training requirement. From 1974 Mr G Carruthers OBE was appointed Executive Board Member of Manpower and also from that date Mr S H Morris was appointed Group Executive Industrial Relations.
