The Medical Research Council (MRC) set up the Tropical Medicine Research Board in 1960, effectively as a successor body to the Colonial Office's Colonial Medical Research Committee. The members and chairman of the Tropical Medicine Research board were appointed by the MRC in consultation with the Colonial Office and its successor funding bodies. On it's creation, half the members of the Board were nominated by the Colonial Office, and medical representatives of the Colonial Office and the Commonwealth Relations Office were appointed as assessors. Existing sub-committees of the Colonial Medical Research Committee were adopted as advisory committees of the MRC in special relation with the Board.
The Board advised the secretary of state for the Colonies (and his successors), through the MRC, on the instigation and sponsorship of medical research into the development and application of drugs and treatments in tropical regions. It also advised the MRC when financed from MRC funds.
Originally, the main funding for the board was provided by the Colonial Office, but in 1963 and 1964 reorganisation of responsibilities moved the funding source firstly to the Department of Technical Co-operation, and then to the Ministry of Overseas Development.
Following a reorganisation at the MRC in September 1974, when the Board came under the newly-formed Social and Environmental Medicine Research Policy Committee, its powers were expanded to encompass overall responsibility for research in some disciplines, including indigenous tropical diseases.
