At a council meeting in January 1964, the Medical Research Council (MRC) decided to convert the Biological Research Awards Committee into the Biological Research Board (BRB). The brief of the former awards committee was extended to resemble that of the MRC's Clinical Research Board, except that the BRB was required to assist and advise MRC in the instigation and supervision of research in the fields of the prevention and cure of illness by chemical and biological agents.
The Biological Research Board came into being in May 1964. It was composed of a chairman and eight other members. Like the Clinical Research Board, the BRB continued to serve the MRC until the major reorganisation of September 1974, when the MRC set up the Social and Environmental Medicine Research Policy Committee over three new research boards (which replaced the BRB and Clinical Research Board) and the Tropical Medicine Research Board.
