Files of the Medical Research Council (MRC) containing papers and correspondence relating to the units and research groups set up by the MRC.
Some units were based at the National Institute for Medical Research, many were based at British universities and hospitals (usually teaching hospitals or major city hospitals). The files contain minutes and papers concerned with the setting up, staffing and administration of such units. Some files contain details relating to the appointment of external staff. Other files are concerned with the research undertaken and give details of research proposals and the future work of units. Also included are progress reports, details of medical protocols, reports of overseas visits and projects, and MRC inspection reports. In cases where units have been wound-up, or merged, there are papers detailing the discussions leading to these decisions, and their implementation.
