Registered files of the Medical Research Council dealing with the award (or refusal of award) of grants for medical and related biological research projects.
The projects cover an enormous range of topics, specialisms and research interests: some are minor projects lasting a few weeks; others are of major importance, lasting for decades. The files contain an outline of the research proposal, together with details of proposed methodology, staffing, equipment and costings. Most files contain references, testimonials and supporting papers from colleagues and institutions. In most cases there is an assessment of the project, followed by a decision on the award. Some files contain follow up reports and progress reports.
Alphabetical by grant applicant's name.
The Medical Research Council (MRC) makes grants in aid of medical and related biological research subject to the approval of a specific programme in each case. The purpose of the grants scheme is to complement the resources of the researcher's own institution by meeting the special costs arising from research projects that are of interest to the Council. Grants may be awarded for research in universities, medical schools, hospitals or other research institutions, or in general practice. An MRC grant may provide for remuneration for research workers, graduate or technical assistants and other professionals, expenses (laboratory materials and animals, travel costs) and apparatus. Applications can be made by any graduate research worker.
