From 1999 Foreign and Commonwealth Office
The Defence Department was established to handle defence questions for the Commonwealth and remaining dependent territories when the Commonwealth Office was established in 1966.
The department was abolished upon the formation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in October 1968, when responsibility for Commonwealth defence passed to two new FCO departments: the Defence Policy Department and the Defence Training and Supply Department.
