In 1999 Foreign and Commonwealth Office
Originally established in the Commonwealth Relations Office in 1964, the Asia Economic Department continued in existence in the Commonwealth Office until the formation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office(FCO) in October 1968. Its economic relations functions were then distributed between the geographical departments which covered Asia in the FCO (South Asian Department for Ceylon, India and Pakistan, and South East Asian Department for Malaysia and Singapore), while remaining development and aid matters relating to the Colombo Plan became the responsibility of the South Asia Department of the Ministry of Overseas Development.
