Administrative / biographical background

The British Indian Ocean Territory was created as a British dependency in 1965: initially consisting of the Chagos Islands and three other island groups previously administered by Seychelles, since 1976 it has comprised just the Chagos Islands. The Crown purchased the Islands in 1967 and the Territory is administered from London by a commissioner who is assisted by the officer in charge of the Royal Navy complement on Diego Garcia, the largest island.
