Although the SSRC was constituted by order in council in December 1965 by agreement with the Science Research Council (SRC) financial responsibility for research grants already awarded by SRC in the social sciences was not transferred until 1966 and during the interim period SSRC were assisted in the determination of awards by the Research Grants Sub-Committee of the SRC Human Sciences Committee.
