The Research Grants Committee invited applications from the research worker to support pure research on a potentially exciting and promising line of enquiry without specifying any particular sciences or scientific objectives. The Committee had a member of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research as chairman and included among its members many distinguished British scientists and, as assessors, the Chairman of the University Grants Committee and the Physical and Biological secretaries of the Royal Society.
