The Secondary Science Curriculum Review was set up as a joint venture by the Schools Council for the Curriculum and Examinations and the Association for Science Education (ASE) in 1981. Its purpose was to look at the aims of science education at secondary level and to develop courses suitable for pupils at all levels.
The Steering Committee was set up to provide professional advice to the Review to act as a channel of communication between the Review and the Schools Council and the ASE and to be accountable for the activities of the Review.
When the Schools Council was abolished in 1984, responsibility for the review passed to the School Curriculum Development Committee which replaced it.
The Steering Committee met in full three times a year. Other meetings and sub-groups were held at the discretion of the Chair on the advice of the Director.
