This series contains registered files in the CZ series of the Department of Energy and predecessors' Atomic Energy Division.

Many of the files relate to the setting up of British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL) and The Radiochemical Centre Ltd (TRCL) under the Atomic Energy Authority Act 1971. BNFL had its headquarters at Risley, Cheshire; until 1970 it was originally referred to as 'The Nuclear Fuel Company'. TRCL was based at Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

There are also records relating to the financial management of BNFL including its capital structure, licenses, royalties, dividend policy and valuation of its assets. Subsequent records are concerned with proposals for private sector shareholding in BNFL, the possible disposal to the private sector of The Radiochemical Centre and its flotation as Amersham International.
