The British Library Organising Committee was set up in 1971 following the government's British Library White Paper. Its terms of reference were to prepare plans for the organising, staffing and accommodation of the British Library and to coordinate action by the Department of Education and Science and institutions involved, with the object of ensuring that the organisation comes into being at the earliest date possible as an effective going concern. After its third meeting in 1973 the committee was wound up and replaced by the British Libraries Board in April of that year.
