Records of the Arts, Intelligence and External Relations Branch relating to the Department of Education and Science's responsibilities for museums and galleries covering both general policy and matters relating to specific institutions.

Included in the series are files relating to the proposal to build a National Theatre on the South Bank, including the minutes and papers of the South Bank Board. Other subjects cover the control of the export of works of art, the short lived introduction of admission charges in 1972, the transfer of British Rail artefacts to the National Railway Museum, the UK's response to propose to return works of arts expropriated during Second World War and extensions and alterations to some national museum buildings.

Following the General Election of April 1992, the policy responsibility forarts and museums passed from the Department for Education and Science to theDepartment for National Heritage, latterly known as the Department for Culture,Media and Sport (DCMS). These records include general arts and museums-relatedpolicy, as well as the development of legislation and site- and issue-specificinformation, for example, the development and use of the Waverley system withinexport cases and the redevelopment of the Royal Opera House.
