ED 233
1840-1978
Unregistered papers from regional offices of the Department of Education and Science and predecessors compiled and used by individual inspectors in their day to day work.
These papers are the raw working material for the Inspectorate's main function; to advise the Department of Education and Science and local education authorities. They reflect the work of the inspectors' regional offices which includes surveys of educational provision over a division-wide area.
The reports and correspondence cover a wide selection of topics, which often illustrate the concerns of the period during which they were created, including the reorganisation of secondary education, employment of graduate teachers, educational provisions for ethnic minorities, juvenile delinquency and the work of Museums Educational services.

Papers were originally stored in local offices of the Inspectorate, some from offices within the London area but also from at least one local office in the north. They were transferred to the Department of Education and Science's record store at Hayes, around 1992 at the time when the Inspectorate was wound up.
