List 240 is the name given to the Department of Education and Science staff directory. The directory is divided into 3 sections; a general telephone directory, an alphabetical index of staff and a hierarchical description of the organisational responsibilities of staff within branches.
In the third section of the directory a brief précis of the responsibilities of the branches and its constituent divisions is given. Each officer, within the various units or groupings, is identified giving his or her responsibilities, grade and location.
The Establishment and Organisation branch was responsible for arranging, printing and distribution of updates in both the alphabetical list and the separate branch entries.
