The opinions were given by the Law Officers of the Crown to successive education departments in response to enquiries concerning points of law, and mainly relate to the scope of various education acts.
The majority of opinions are given by the Attorney General and the Solicitor General but one file includes those of the first Parliamentary Counsel, 1903-1905.
The list of pieces in this series quotes the former serial numbers of the individual opinion, a descriptive index to which will be found in ED 184/1. A separate index to the opinions of the first Parliamentary Counsel is included in ED 184/14
