Description
(What the record is about)
-
Files of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries relating to the provision of agricultural education in England and Wales.
Nearly all the files were re-registered in the Ministry of Education after the transfer to that ministry of responsibilities in these fields in 1959 and 1964.
The series consists of general, local education authority and Welsh (including Monmouthshire) files. The general files relate to policy matters on agricultural education and to committees and other organisations concerned with agriculture. Some general files (pieces 95-104) have not been re-registered in the Ministry of Education.
The local education authority files consist mainly of files relating to farm institutes but also include some on independent agricultural colleges, as these were re-registered into this series. Some files include reports of HM Inspectors and minutes of local education authority agricultural education subcommittees. For the 1960s period the sample of local education authority files relate to one farm institute or agricultural college in each of the seven geographical divisions into which the country was divided for HM Inspectorate purposes.
The Welsh section of the series consists of both general and local educaiton authority files and includes one file (piece 439) not re-registered in the ministry.

With effect from 1 April 1959, responsibility for agricultural education provided by local education authorities was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to the Ministry of Education.
