ED 54
1879-2000
Files describing the administration of scholarships and grants for further education, covering a broad span from the period of the Education and Science and Art Departments in the late nineteenth century through to the Universities Branch of the Department of Education and Science.
The files relate to grants made to universities; and to the awards and scholarships given to students. Specific matters include royal scholarships, prizes and scholarships from non-public funds, the state scholarship scheme, local authority grants and postgraduate awards.
Files also deal with the aftermath of the Anderson Committee and the resulting 1962 Education Act along with discussions over the continuance of state scholarships for post-graduates and the review of student maintenance grants.
All files, except for those relating to the Further Education and Training Scheme, retain originial file references prefixed 'U'. The 'U' appears originally to have designated 'University Branch' and is continued through to the period of the Department of Education and Science. The earliest files in this series bear the stamp 'T' for Technological Branch but have been re-registered under 'U'. Files describing the administration of the Further Education and Training Scheme are registered under 'O'.

The University Branch administered a variety of scholarship schemes, these primarily associated with the promotion of engineering and mechanical skills. A number of schemes were put forward by non public bodies, for example the Allan and Newton memorial prize funded by the Amalgamated Society of Engineers.
