Folio 379: Marquis of Pombal to L. Pinto de Sousa. Reiterates his denunciation of Spain's perfidious policy, as expressed in his letter of the 21 Sept. (f.337). Is amazed that `our great Allies and Guarantors' should concur with the Spaniards `to induce us to give up to them what never did belong to them, but always was ours.' Spaniards aim at nothing less than the conquest of the whole of Brazil. Portuguese measures there are purely defensive. Denounces the English and Dutch newspapers for publishing tendentious reports, alleging that Spain is peaceably inclined but that Portugal is preparing for war. Has prepared a reply to this calumny, `which the state of my health will not permit me to send you this day.'.
Date and place: 1776 Nov 2 Lisbon.
