Folio 367: L. Pinto de Sousa to Marquis of Pombal. The Ministry here conceal their apprehensions with the greatest care; but he believes they are at last beginning to be seriously worried about Spain's aggressive plans. `The most judicious part of the nation' now realise that they must not hesitate any longer to crush their enemies, `if they are earnestly desirous of avoiding the loss of their colonies.' Pinto is doing his best to reinforce this feeling by `placing in the strongest light' on all occasions, Pombal's views as expressed in his letter of the 21 Sept., and he will continue to do so. English intelligence reports also agree with those of Pombal that the objective of the great expedition from Cadiz is either Rio de Janeiro or the island of Santa Catarina.
Date and place: 1776 Oct 29 London.
