Folio 359: Dom Vicente de Sousa Coutinho to Marquis of Pombal. Spaniards and French are much upset by news of recent British victory in America. His interview with Maurepas, who told him that Portugal was evidently bent on war with Spain and that `he would not attempt to retard the Spanish armaments.' Further arguments on both sides, and with Vergennes, who took the same line, but assured him that France did not intend to join Spain in attacking Portugal. French reinforcements for the West Indies are obviously more than what is needed there. Endorsed: `Sent the 22 October by Mr Pinto to the Marquis of Pombal.'.
Date and place: 1776 Oct 16 Fontainebleau.
