Folio 349: Dom Vicente de Sousa Coutinho to Marquis of Pombal. Fears that the French may be yielding to Spanish pressure to activate the Family Compact and involve France in a war with Great Britain and Portugal. Both he and the English ambassador, Lord Stormont, are convinced that unless Portugal makes a formal written promise of restitution of territory taken from the Spaniards in Brazil, `nothing can be obtained towards preserving the Peace.'.
Date and place: 1776 Oct 2 Paris.
