Folio 345: Martinho de Mello e Castro to same. Remnant is probably making difficulties over the delivery of the bombs, in the hope of getting a larger order, as he did in 1765. In that case, try to get the bombs from another quarter. Failing that, `we will help ourselves here as well as we can.' No need for the English founder who offers his services, `as we have very able hands in that branch', trained by Brigadier Bartholomeu da Costa. No need for the saltpetre offered by Mayne as `we annually receive a sufficient quantity from India' at a reasonable price. As to the Englishman who offers his services to introduce into Portugal the manufacture of earthenware in the English style, De Mello will investigate local production and reply later. The Count of Penhausen has arrived, and made a good first impression.
Date and place: 1776 Oct 1 Lisbon.
