Folio 337: Marquis of Pombal to L. Pinto de Sousa. Walpole's latest letters of the 11 and 17 Sept. have caused the greatest alarm and astonishment in the Portuguese Court. It is inconceivable that the British ministers `should be those, who take upon themselves to propose to us the violent, iniquitous, and lion-like pretensions, made up of sophisms, quibbles, and imputations evidently contradictory with the known and public actions of the Spanish Ministry, using for this purpose the words of the Lion to the Lamb in the Fable.' It is as irrational to suppose that the professed Spanish friendship for Britain can be sincerely meant, `as any Christian can suppose consistency between the Gospel and the Alcoran.' Hopes Lord Weymouth will realize the truth of this soon.
Date and place: 1776 Sept 21 Lisbon.
