Folio 294: Vicente de Sousa Coutinho to Marquis of Pombal. Is convinced that the French government does not want a war and will prevent the Spaniards from attacking Portugal itself. French government also believes that the Portuguese have a sufficient force in America to repel any Spanish attack there. Pinto de Sousa has written him that `it is the English alone, who, in so critical a moment as the present, can disarm the malice of our enemies.'.
