Folio 388: R. Walpole to Earl of Hillsborough. As ordered, he has complained, in an amicable manner, to Ayres de Sá, of the disadvantages put upon HM's subjects by the unexpected decree of 30 August. Ayres de Sá denied that any unfriendliness was implied or intended, adding that when the Dutch had taken a similar step, and Pinto de Sousa had told Viscount Weymouth that Portuguese government might do likewise, Weymouth raised no objection. Decree was published so suddenly in order to forestall representations by Spanish and French ambassadors. Walpole's comments. Latest war news. The Royal family and the Court have gone to the Ajuda Palace. Russian envoy `says that the Treaty between his Court and the Dutch is arrived in Holland for the consideration of the States.'.
