Folio 380: L. Pinto de Sousa to Earl of Hillsborough. By orders from his Court, he must continue his representations over the case of the Boa Viagem. The ship was, admittedly, French-built and owned before the war; but it had been sold and purchased in good faith by Senhor Laroche, Portuguese merchant at Lisbon from the proprietor, Boutard, before the declaration of war between Britain and France. Boutard was merely a passenger on board at the time of its capture and not its captain, as the captors alleged. Adduces other proofs of the Portuguese ownership of the Boa Viagem, and demands its complete return, and reparation for the insult done to the Portuguese flag.
