Folio 281: R. Walpole to Earl of Hillsborough. Encloses copies of a printed decree (f.286) and other documentation on the Queen of Portugal's decision to forbid `all privateers the ports of the Kingdom and Dominions of Portugal, and also all prizes whatsoever made as well by King's ships as others'. His conversations with Mello e Castro on this decree, which Walpole considers is aimed entirely at the English, despite Mello e Castro's denials and explanations. Awaits further instructions from H.M.'s government. Portuguese are strengthening their Navy, but cutting down on their army, showing that they feel quite secure from Spanish and French hostilities.
