Folio 99: R. Walpole to Earl of Hillsborough. Acknowledges receipt of official correspondence explanatory of `H.M.'s just and moderate proceedings with respect to the Republic of Holland'. Arrival of the Portuguese warship Bom Successo (64) with the Spanish treasure and passengers left at Fayal. Regards this as a gross breach of Portuguese neutrality. Suggests this unfriendly action should be highly resented, especially since under the terms of the treaty of 10 May 1703, Portugal is theoretically bound to help Great Britain in a war with France and Spain.
Date and place: 1780 May 20 Lisbon.
