Folio 274: R. Walpole to Viscount Weymouth. Another incident has occurred over HMS Pelican, which was prevented from going out of the river. But as will be seen from the enclosed correspondence (ff.279-291), this has been satisfactorily settled by the Captain formally apologising, the lieutenant placed under arrest, and then released at the Queen's request. Pays tribute to de Sá e Mello's accommodating and friendly manner. Need to satisfy Portuguese over the earlier complaint and give Pinto de Sousa due credit. Hears latter is very ill and may be replaced by Horta, the Portuguese Minister in Holland. De Sá says the Toulon Fleet has passed the Straits, bound for Boston with 2,500 soldiers, and arms and clothing for 12,000 men.
Date and place: 1778 May 16 Lisbon.
