Folio 171: Viscount Weymouth to R. Walpole. In consequence of Walpole's and Pinto's complaints about Capt. Elphinston's misconduct, and after an investigation by the Board of Admiralty, the King has directed that Elphinston should be dismissed from the command of his ship. Pinto de Sousa has been so informed (f.168). Walpole is to express in the strongest terms HM's concern at Elphinston's misbehaviour and to reiterate that `the most precise orders shall be given to prevent the like in future'. Elphinston's conduct mitigated to some degree by his readiness to comply with Walpole's suggestions to make amends in so far as he could. The Consul-General is being ordered to cooperate more closely with naval officers in future, particularly in recovering deserters.
Date and place: 1778 Apr 28 London.
