Folio 168: Viscount Weymouth to L. Pinto de Sousa. In reply to his protest of the 9 March (f.116), the Board of Admiralty have agreed that Capt. Elphinston was entirely in the wrong, with the mitigating circumstance that he obeyed the orders of the Portuguese government when Walpole told him to do so. However, the King has dismissed him from the command of his ship, and HM sincerely regrets that one of his officers so misbehaved himself. The strictest orders will be given to ensure that naval officers give no offence to the Court of Portugal in future, and maintain close liaison with the Consuls-General at Lisbon.
Date and place: 1778 Apr 27 London.
