Folio 21: R. Walpole to Viscount Weymouth. Encloses copy (f.28) of the declaration of the captain of the French ship Mercure, relative to an incident with HMS Levant (Capt. Murray R.N.) off Cascaes. Moderate attitude of French ambassador, Marquis de Blosset, and of Pombal over this and other naval incidents. Need for all British naval commanders to be reminded of the Admiralty order of the 4 July 1744, of which a copy is enclosed (f.26), forbidding the firing of salutes by ships of any nationality above Belem Castle.
Date and place: 1776 Aug 17 Lisbon.
