Folio 8: Committee of Oporto Merchants to Viscount Weymouth. As he will see from the enclosed letters (ff. 3, 5) the Royal Alto Douro Wine Coy. has been reorganized and is now directly competing with British wine importers in the British market. As a recent royaledict of Jan. 1776 gives the Coy. priority in the selection and purchase of all wines in the designated district, they will drive all British merchants out of business, unless the treaty rights exempting British merchants in Portugal from all monopolies are restored and enforced. Urgently petition for his support, especially as their 1767 grievances are still unredressed.
