Folio 149: R. Walpole to Viscount Weymouth. Encloses copies of official correspondence (ff.153-58) received from Pombal relative to his proposals for settling the Portuguese-Spanish disputes in South America. Pombal argues that he would rather France and Britain acted as arbitrators than as mediators. Walpole is now convinced of Pombal's sincerity, `as he repeatedly declares, to finish with the Court of Spain in a permanent and substantial manner.' King Joseph reportedly much better. Conflicting reports about Bolts and his ship from London.
Date and place: 1776 Mar 16 Lisbon.
